How it works
Each piece is unique. I start by cutting the slate roof tile to size and cleaning off any surface debris. I then closely inspect the slate to check and remove any loose surface layers and give it a clean. I can then start to draw on the contours by hand. Once the outline is complete, I choose a colour palette and paint on the contour bands. Then the fine work starts as I annotate the map with landmarks, place names etc. Lastly, I apply a clear, durable varnish to protect the surface.
I have several different formats for the maps:
Wall Hanging
A plaited chord threaded through a hole on each side and knotted together.
This would need a hook or pin in the wall for hanging.
I use this format for larger maps with slate sizes up to 30 x 40cm
Self-standing, hinged
I use one or two hinges to make a fold-out version that can rest on a shelf, desk or window-sill.
This format works really well for ‘linear’ maps like Hadrian’s Wall or the Coast-to-Coast walk.
Self-standing, single support
I use two types of support;
A slotted wooden block or a hinged ‘leg’
Both formats would stand on a shelf, desk or a window sill.
Size is limited to 15cm high by 25cm wide.

A Special Gift...
I am always happy to paint a slate map that is special to you. Each slate map can be personalised with places, landmarks, dates, and dedications of your choice, to make it a unique gift.
’15 miles around’ …. Your village or town or maybe your favourite hill or mountain
Offa’s Dyke footpath with all the overnight stops marked
The Three Peaks Challenge…. Remember the achievement - add the date and the team
Please contact me to discuss your idea.
I will draw up a quick sketch based on our initial discussion so that we can agree the layout and any personalised additions before I make a start.
Sending a larger slate through the post is just too risky.
However, I can box up and send a 15 x 15 cm slate including the slotted, wooden support. The size and weight allow it to be classed as a ‘large letter’.
A message or title can be added to the front face of the wooden block or on the slate itself.
I am happy to consider delivering the slate to you or for you to pick up the slate, by arrangement.
Otherwise, I will be selling at the following craft fairs in 2023:

Hellens Garden Festival Sat/Sun 10/11th June, Hellens Manor, Much Marcle, Ledbury
